First of all, hi everyone, I’m Antonello and here we are in Secinaro, all you will discover today can be found broadly on the website www.abruzzoqualita.it under Secinaro. First of all, coming here, you cannot fail to have noticed the Sirente mountain which with its 2349 meters is the third highest peak in the Apennines. The Sirente, also known as the Abruzzo Dolomites, contains some treasures to discover. The first, in addition to the magnificent landscape, is undoubtedly the Neviera: a place naturally exposed to the north that accumulates ice and snow during the winter and keeps it throughout the summer. This has allowed an ice market over the centuries which lasted until the 1950s (then disappeared due to the advent of refrigerators) as evidenced by some documents in the municipality and was used by Rome in Puglia for medicinal uses and for the preparation of some beverages intended for the more affluent populations.
Another very important resource, which is still used today, is the millenary beech forest that grows in these places due to the particular conformation of the territory thanks to the right humidity from the Adriatic that is captured and conveyed by the Sirente massif.
Furthermore, from Secinaro there are numerous itineraries to do on foot which are highly suggestive. I will mention a few:
- Path that crosses the valley behind the town and reaches the water source (chalet)
From the Chalet there are also several paths that arrive respectively:
1) Fonte Canale (you can also get there from Gagliano Aterno via a dirt road)
2) Neviera
3) Straw of Tione
4) Piana del Sirente
5) Fossa del Pratiglio (large circular depression at about 1600 meters devoid of vegetation)
6) Vetta del Sirente (this is the most suggestive path that goes up the gully with a breathtaking view), there are two other paths that reach us, one from Rovere that goes all the way up the ridge and one from behind which consists of a dirt road up to the last 800 meters of altitude difference, but it is the least exciting since the Sirente from that side has a gentler slope and is devoid of vegetation - Path that from the fountain of the belvedere above the town arrives directly at the source channel, a small plateau at an altitude of 1400 meters where there is a refuge and a source of water.
- Pagliare di Tione: these are residential areas that used the shepherds for transhumance. They consist of small houses with running water (in summer) and a well for rainwater. They have no electricity and are completely surrounded by greenery.
- Circular path that starts from via del codacchio and circumscribes the valley behind it, crosses the small gorges of Secinaro and reaches the cross of San Marco.
- Path of the morning procession of Good Friday (unique in Italy), is a particular procession probably of pagan origin that starts at 9 in the morning and crosses a millenary, very suggestive path, until it reaches a hill where there is a dedicated cross. Then we go down through another itinerary singing ancient songs and crossing purifying fires.
In addition, if you like walking in the mountains, there is an association called the rainbow of Sirente which manages a refuge (visible on the plain) which organizes a calendar with one or two outings per month scheduled at the beginning of the year as well as various outings. additional programmed on the spot (with 15 € you have the annual membership card that allows you to participate in all these activities as well as educational activities such as archeotrekking and discovery of herbs and mushrooms).
